Some fun facts for Democrats: 1.The median unemployment duration actually increased to 16.4 weeks from 15.7 weeks in July, while the share of the unemployed without work for 27 weeks and longer jumped to 37.9% from 37.0%. There are 3 million more long-term unemployed today — four years after the end of the recession — than before the recession. 2.The unemployment rate fell to 7.3% from 7.4%, but that was mainly because another 312,000 working-age Americans left the workforce. The stunner is that the labor force participation fell to 63.2%, which is the lowest rate since August 1978 and before the enormous influx of women in the workforce in the 1980s and 1990s. 3.Although median annual household income rose to $52,100 in June, fromits recent inflation-adjusted trough of $50,700 in August 2011, it remained $2,400 lower — a 4.4 percent decline — than in June 2009, when the recession ended. This drop, combined with the 1.8 percent decline that occurred during the recession, leaves median household income 6.1 percent — or $3,400 — below its level in December 2007, when the economic slump began.
