Some good news from Ukraine. Russia, Ukraine, the US and the EU - TopicsExpress

Some good news from Ukraine. Russia, Ukraine, the US and the EU have managed to work out a preliminary deal for a humanitarian aid mission to be spearheaded by the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC). If this goes through, it could save hundreds of lives and provide much needed relief for the civilian population caught in the bloody civil war in South-East Ukraine. The mission would see no military escort and require all material aid to be inventoried and confirmed by the ICRC. It would also mark the first time all sides of the conflict worked together to provide humanitarian aid. The official ICRC statement below is as follows: icrc.org/eng/resources/documents/news-release/2014/08-11-ukraine-east-civilians-plight-concern.htm This has been confirmed by several major news networks, including the BBC, CBC, The Guardian, USA Today, Al Jazeera, CNN, The Associated Press, the pro-Ukrainian Kyiv Post, the pro-Russian RT, as well as the presidential websites for both Russia and Ukraine, not to mention many other outlets. While each network puts its own spin on it - the solid fact remains that negotiations are taking place and now it appears to only be a matter of deciding exactly what type of aid will be sent and in what amounts. Hopefully all involved parties will continue to negotiate and work out favourable terms for an envoy. If successful, the envoy could be sent out within a week. hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_UKRAINE?SITE=AP theguardian/world/2014/aug/11/russia-humanitarian-convoy-ukraine usatoday/story/news/world/2014/08/11/ukraine-donetsk-surrounded-flee-russian-separatists/13887869/ aljazeera/news/europe/2014/08/ukraine-russia-agree-luhansk-aid-mission-2014811175531131587.html cbc.ca/news/world/ukraine-crisis-red-cross-to-lead-humanitarian-mission-into-luhansk-1.2732881 kyivpost/content/ukraine-abroad/usa-today-red-cross-to-lead-relief-effort-to-eastern-ukraine-360199.html rt/news/179496-lavrov-humanitarian-corridor-agreed/ eng.kremlin.ru/news/22803 president.gov.ua/en/news/30960.html
