Some have written to their representatives in St Tammany asking - TopicsExpress

Some have written to their representatives in St Tammany asking them to support our School Boards resolution to STOP CCS. Here is a portion of Representative Pearsons response, he is writing to a group so I thought folks here may want to read also. Since this is directed to a group, I want to make sure that everyone has the ability to actually see the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) which can be found at corestandards.org/the-standards If we are talking about standards which our students should be able to achieve, and after talking to many educators within our parish, I cannot say I have a problem with the standards listed below (from the Common Core). If someone has a suggestion of one or several of the below standards that should not be expected of our students, I am very open to hear their views. 1st Grade - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text 2nd Grade - Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text 6th Grade - Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. By the end of grade 11, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 11-CCR text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. By the end of grade 12, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of the grades 11-CCR text complexity band independently and proficiently. In Grade 1, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20; (2) developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; (3) developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units; and (4) reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking There are aspects of Common Core that I do have considerable problems with. In our last legislative session, I filed and passed the resolution below. While only a few may recall this, it was only days later when the Department of Education withdrew from their contract with InBloom. I am confident we will go further this session with concrete laws that will protect the identity of our students data.
