Some history of the Bronx today maybe? Has anyone wondered why its The Bronx and not The Manhattan or The Brooklyn? The first settlers in the Bronx was the Bronck family, early Dutch settlers (they set up there in 1639). When people went there, they visited The Broncks, which eventually became The Bronx. A borough is like a county within a city, NY City has five and the Bronx is the only borough thats not a part of an island. Staten Island and Manhattan are Islands and Brooklyn and Queens are parts of Long Island. In the late 1800s, they purposely rerouted the Harlem River and made Manhattan a little smaller and The Bronx a little bigger, but the people that lived on Manhattan part that became a part of the Bronx didnt want to live in the Bronx, so their Bronx neighborhood (Marble Hill) is still officially considered Manhattan. The population of the Bronx is estimated at a little less than 1.5 million. The Bronx is the poorest of NYs boroughs, but it has a great zoo, cool botanical gardens and some very nice neighborhoods. The best part? The Yankees play there.
