Some impressions after our trip - so stop reading now if you are going to be bored! 1. We DO live in a beautiful country. 2. The people are generally friendly and generous. People in Limpopo live an incredibly hard life, the countryside is mostly harsh, there is little employment opportunity there other than in the tourism industry. 3. Visible policing in Limpopo is effective. We were stopped about 6 times, for license checks, roadworthiness checks, and once for speeding, once for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign in the middle of nowhere. The traffic police are friendly and were happy to let me go with a warning, rather than a fine, and I was not asked for a bribe at any time. When they do catch you speeding, they stop you; unlike in the Cape, where a camera sends you a fine. Way more effective, if not as profitable! 4. The roads, other than the main freeways, are terrible. Most of our driving was on dirt roads, which were easier to drive on than potholed tar roads. Speed limits were generally lower than the roads required. Plenty of 60 and 80kmh zones out in the countryside.
