Some key questions that need to be addressed by Yreka City Council regarding YPD handling of dogs : 1. Were YPD officers properly informed and trained regarding all relevant CA, county, and Yreka codes ? 2. Were YPD officers instructed to never adopt out particular breeds, including pitbulls ? 3. Were YPD officers pressured to euthanize more animals more quickly ? 4. When ACO Leaf was dismissed, 11 dogs were in the shelter. Three days later, most or all of these dogs were not there. Were those dogs all euthanized ? 5. Were YPD officers instructed to lie to the public about the disposition of euthanized animals, when questioned re: same ? Because these very serious questions touch on behaviors that may have occurred up and down the chain of command, an internal YPD investigation will not suffice. An independent investigation, preferably led by an investigator from outside Siskiyou, is required to ensure a thorough and let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may outcome. .
