Some last thoughts on Newfoundland. First observation I almost - TopicsExpress

Some last thoughts on Newfoundland. First observation I almost forgot. I didnt see a single farm. Apparently farming on the Rock has been difficult throughout its history. I also saw more hunters, or rather evidence of hunters. In Tims line ups a lot of fellows were decked out like poster kids from Field and Stream. A lot of 4 X 4 pick up trucks with ATVs in the back rattled around the place. A lot of 4 X 4s were often pulled over on the side of the highway, frequently in clusters, many with empty trailers indicating they had offloaded their ATVs, and of course, the two trucks in the ferry line up with the heads of fresh kills proudly mounted on top of their ATVs. Once was the skull and antlers, the other, a moose, looked like it was headed to the taxidermist. Then theres the ferry. Apparently because I arrived early each sailing, I was consigned to what I call the car crypt. There is a car deck BELOW the main car deck, accessible only when they open a trap door in the floor of the main car deck to expose a ramp into the bottom of the vessel. You drive your car down the ramp and it is stowed below the water line. Once all the cars are in this space (first on) they close the trap door and load the main car deck. (9 decks of cars and passengers). The added joy of being allocated to the car crypt is that you dont get to offload from the ferry until EVERY ONE ELSE IS OFF. Its an 8 hour crossing, best done at night so you can sleep across. We had 40 kmh plus winds but you couldnt tell from on board. Expensive. Over $340 return for one passenger with a reserved recliner and a single vehicle. Twice that for a berth in a cabin. Coffee was ok.
