Some lessons from training camp this weekend (which may be of interest to other runners): 1. I over-heated like crazy a few times. If the weather remains this hot on race day - Ill definitely jump in the lakes, creeks and rivers to cool down my core temperature. 2. Not only will I walk the gravel section before Millar Road aid station on race day, I now plan to walk a chunk of the sealed road too. The hill is longer and steeper than I gave it credit for. 3. I am now comfortable with walking 60% + of the Western Okataina Walkway long uphills. 4. Ill also walk parts of the steep downhill on the Western Okataina Walkway. I have no shame in walking a super-steep downhill :-) 5. My Eastern Okataina strategy will be to gently run the nice downhill and gentle bits of trail and briskly walk the sharp uphills. 6. Ill probably walk about 70% of the Northern Tarawera track (btwn. Humphries and The Outlet), for me - this section is all about energy conservation. 7. The benefits of doing depletion runs over the past 5-6 weeks have finally kicked in - but there have been some ugly times on the trails to get to this point. (thanks for the weekend Vicki Michelle Woolley, Tim Day, Jumbo Rich and the Running Wild (NZ) team!
