Some moments during my hospital stay were more awkward than I usually experience. I was supposed to have assistance to get out of bed. I had a seven-inch new painful scar on my abdomen. In the middle of the night I rang and rang for help to go to the bathroom. I could hear a lot of noise in the corridor, but no one came. I tried to find the urinal, but, wherever it was I could not twist around to find it. Finally, I knew I had to get out of the bed or wet the bed. I had an IV tube with the needle in my hand. I was wearing one of those hospital gowns. Why they call it a gown, I don’t know. Try wearing that gown to a ball. I was able to raise the head of the bed to help me get out. As I lowered my legs to the floor, it was apparent that the IV tube was trapped in the bed mechanism. I could not dislodge it. I was on blood thinners, my blood pressure must have been going up. My nose started to bleed. I almost thought, “oh sh*t, what else can happen?”, but I knew I must not even think that word or I would. It was about the only thing that could make it worse. I yelled, “I’m bleeding”. Two nurses ran in. One male one female. The male lifted my gown. The female held the urinal and held my penis just inside. Decades before, I was sure no female would touch it again, but life has its surprises.
