Some more Food for Thought… The Gibran quote attached to this photo speaks to what happens to a poets spirit when his/her voice is silenced, or worse, ignored while the poet lives and walks among. Our Poets are community people who do their poetic duty for us at great sacrifice; starving for food, comfort, understanding and appreciation -- yet, for one reason or another, in this case community apathy, go ignored, dismissed and under-appreciated. (Thanks, Not4Prophet, for the post). Heres a Poem that might illustrate this for you all: In Effigy (for my good friend, Pedro Pietri) by Jesús Papoleto Meléndez I will not be among the hypocrites. I will not stand above the grave in solemn clothes, Silent in my sorrow. When they come to count the yesterdays, I will not lend my memory. When the flowers have been picked by bees, its seeds in the pocket of the wind; When the earth has laid itself into its own final rest; When the wide-eyed child, fatherless, hugs warm against its mother’s breasts – What stories will they have to say? Those that will cry and hold their faces in their hands, they will come to read the poems – the first of a thousand times. But they will never hear the voice that sings or see the shadow when it moves! They will be blind to mystery, As they did not understand the spirit when it breathed And when it walked among them. What sad complexions will be in their eyes? O remember the wine, And the taste of bread that died on silent tables –- I saw his hand, when he reached… He was a brilliant man. O, He was a brilliant man!
