Some odd choices were made by a Buffalo News reporter and her editors in an almost alarmist article today concerning the polar vortex and the coming winter. In a forecast from AccuWeather, there is a projection made of a brief appearance by the vortex later in September (it could happen, but I dont view that as predictable in this time range), and a wild start to winter for the NE tied to el nino, which does not yet exist. It probably will take shape later this winter as either a weak or moderate el nino, but its impacts here are not yet predictable either. To make matters worse, the reporter jumps from that questionable forecast made by otherwise educated meteorologists, and draws a comparison to the gibberish put out by the Farmers Almanac(s). That gibberish is not based on recognized scientific practice. The News is a paying client of AccuWeather, but seems to interview the Buffalo NWS more often for their expertise. Of course, the NWS--like I would have, if asked--refused to venture into Silly Season.
