Some of my favorite memories of growing up in Zurich were the sounds only heard in a small village. Lets begin with the whistle at the plaining mill which called the men to work at 8 am and also let them know it was lunch time at 12pm - back to work at 1pm and the end of their work day at 5pm. There was no reason not to know the time back then. Another memory is the church bells calling people to worship on Sunday Mornings. Sometimes the bell at the Catholic church would start to sound during the week indicating the death of one of the parishioners. There would be a pause between each ring and the number of rings indicated the age of the deceased. Everyone would try to figure who it could be and would likely call central to get the information. I believe it was Mr. Mero who was in charge of that bell. The chimes playing from the Lutheran Church every Saturday evening are well remembered. Of course, we all remember to school bell - I wonder if it is still there. I also recall the flap, flap flapping of the huge belts running on pulleys at the chopping mill. But the best sound we all heard in the evenings was Grant Edighoffer playing his trumpet. He was a treasure I will never forget.
