Some of my friends and family members have asked me, How can you be so involved in politics? Doesnt the corruption depress you? I hang out with good people -- people who care about poverty, homelessness, unemployment, education, the environment, womens rights, veterans, the elderly, animals. etc. I hang out with people who commit themselves to the greater good -- not to corporate profit. Every day, I meet people who inspire me, teach me, support me, and guide me to being a better person. Sure, every now and then I meet someone who is in it for their own gain, but those people dont last long. The ones who stay, the ones who keep looking for the bigger picture, the ones who keep fighting no matter how great the challenges -- those are the people who fascinate me. A distant cousin of mine recently told me I use the word hero too often, and that cheapens the word. I disagree. Everyday people have their heroic moments every day. Everyday people resist the temptation for cynicism and despair and drama to do amazing things. These people -- everyday people doing extraordinary things -- are my inspiration. How could I possibly be depressed around such beauty and strength?
