Some of our grasshoppers, like the Differential Grasshoppers in the attached photos, are still active. We know they can be real pests to our gardens and crops. But do you know the rest of the story--the benefits they provide in the larger scheme of life: 1. They help keep plants in check. Giant rag weed is one of the Differential Grasshoppers favorite foods!! 2. When grasshoppers die, soil microbes break them down, enriching the soil with nitrogen and other nutrients for plant use. 3. Their excreted wastes also provide nutrients for plants. 4. They are a very important food source for birds, mammals, lizards, spiders, and other insects.
