Some of the 1923 records and accounts from the Vuts Häpänen Journal: Vuts investigated an occurrence at the Chinese-Canadian restaurant, White and Wong. Over night all of the saltshakers had been stolen. The eatery was located on the backside of Front Street in an area originally owned by Moe Hamed and his twin boys, now fittingly designated as Moe Hamed Alley. This was the same area where the region’s first large petroleum spill occurred. It was known as an area of gaseous clay before it became Moe Hamed Alley – note of importance – two years later historic collector Anne Teak unearthed the saltshakers at the burned ruins of a home formerly owned by Briny Pyke. An incident on Bloor Street in late September sent a local man to the hospital. Horses pulling wagons, one east and one west, ran head-on into each other. The driver going west plunged forward and jammed his crotch into the wagon’s brake baton. Dick Hertz will likely be held overnight for further observation. The driver of the other wagon Tess Tickle was not injured – neither were charged. Christy Welch could not persuade Harry Pitts to marry her so she wed her back up groom, Justin Case. As a result she became Charity Case. Charity and Justin started an illegal activity known as the ‘grime crime’ better recognized today as mud wrestling. It was not that mud wrestling in itself was an offense. It was considered fraudulent promotion since the entire Porcupine camp is located in a clay belt. When Vuts Häpänen announced the start of his journal, some people were quite taken aback – because of his Finnish accent, and the Scandinavian pronunciation of “j”, the assertion came across that he was starting a urinal. He was a little perturbed at continually receiving round, white blocks in the mail for the next several months.
