Some of the codes for swimming pool installations have changed. - TopicsExpress

Some of the codes for swimming pool installations have changed. Some existing pools that were installed a few years ago even if done to the code standards of that time may not pass an electrical inspection by todays standards. Here are a few quick tips that pool installers/customers should be aware of so that the pool will be ready for the electrician when he comes to do the electrical hook up. 1.) Pool pumps need to have a power cord that is 36 long with a factory molded 3 prong twist lock plug on the end and a weatherproof connector on the pump end. 2.) The pool installer should install a stainless steel nipple between the pump and the skimmer hose for the electrical ground connection. 3.) The pump must be installed far enough away from the pool wall for the 36 cord to reach the electrical post. Post can not be installed any closer then 6 from the pool by code. 4.) Timers. Although timers are not an electrical code requirement but a state energy code requirement it is strongly recommended to use a timer in the installation to save money on energy use and may be enforced by town inspectors based on your jurisdiction. We can supply a basic timer for an additional charge if your pool installer does not provide you with one. Most pool installers are up to par on these new code requirements and any electrical pumps and equipment that is purchased locally will most likely be set up to current local code requirements from the factory. If we need to change or modify a cord on a pump or disconnect hoses to ground our installation or need to move the pump so that the cord will reach the electrical hook up we can but there will be an additional charge. We are not responsible for any leaks due to disconnecting hoses or having to move the pump assembly so please make your pool installer aware of these important requirements and ask them to take care of any of these before signing off on an installation so that it will be ready for the electrical hook up when the electrician arrives. See our previous post for a picture of a proper installation.
