Some of the elder of us locally might remember Stevensons School Supply in Lincoln. That is one that goes way back. Sam Stevenson was a school superintendent in Aurora, NE prior. He authored the little book Memory Gems in 1924. That was at the time that Dad was a freshman at the Weeping Water high school and Mom a sophomore at the Avoca high school. Mom used this little book in her teachings in the country schools she taught at. It was full of little guidelines for life. It included not only guidelines for giving the pledge of allegiance to our countrys flag, but good rules for being a good citizen. It was also full of poems , many by the widsom of Walt Whitman. I am currently restoring it from the old book must in a sack with baking soda. In the even that I forget to take it out in 5 years and someone stumbles upon it..... please take the time to look at it with the pride and reverence .... and in the sprit that Sam took the time to pass it along for us.
