Some of the images of unrest, violence, and anger that has been displayed in our everyday print and TV media drew me to my knees this past year. We can assign blame, grimace in digest, or recoil in hardened disbelief; but, as Christians, we should recognize that perhaps these are harvests awaiting late workers needed for the work in the fields. As I end 2014, I am reminded by Matthews summary and Jesus’ words: And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 10:35-38).
