Some of the rarest and most powerful voices coming from Israel and Palestine tell us that we need to give up just supporting one side in the conflict and instead support both sides. Often the people who are saying this have experienced great grief and suffered enormously but somehow they have broken free from a cycle of revenge and discovered that their sense of humanity is even larger than their pain. These people have died to their ordinary identities and died to that part of themselves which supports only one side and have been reborn as a person who has compassion even for those people who were once their enemy. Why does war exist? what is its purpose at the deepest level? Perhaps its purpose is wake us up from our superficial existence and into a deeper relationship to death. Instead of feeding the Gods of war with human lives perhaps we should feed them by dying whilst we are still alive. Then we can stop being one-sided and have compassion even for the those who we once thought of as an enemy. By Jason Hine
