Some of the tips my Mum learnt and some what I have learnt are as follows. Decided what era you want the house to be. Read up a little about it. Especially if it is Tudor as there are loads of litttle things you can make or buy which make it more interesting. My husband made the ends of the baking paddles with bits of tin from a tin can If you want to put loads of pieces in so you would like it cluttered make it Victorian. In fact before you throw anything away check it cannot be use towards making something. Certain sweet wrappers, lolly sticks, coffee stirrer. Even the sterident or similar sterilising tablet tubes can be cut down for buckets or flower holders. You can buy lead easily to finish of roofs, but if you only want a small piece, cut a piece of paper the size you need and paint it with silver acrylic paint and dry brush it with black it comes up lovely and then stick it done.Little things help like when you paint a shop till paint it gold or brass and then dry brush it with black. This picks up on the keys and the other mouldings on it. Also with painting we always use samples and a lot of the big DIY stores sell samples of paint and a couple sell the old victorian colours. Also you can cheat by sending of for blind and fabric samples. One main this is watch your scale. As it can vary you can have small and big 1/12th and small and big 1/24th and there are still a lot of 1/16th scale houses around. To help with scale I found a picture on the interent which may help.
