Some of us have been talking all afternoon about refinishing cabinets but Im starting a new thread so everyone sees it. If a cabinet isnt too bad or alligatored I like Formbys Furniture Restorer. It will soften the crud without taking it down the bare wood that would then require the stain, seal, varnish routine. I did a Wilcox & Gibbs table with it - the old alligatored stuff was softened up enough so I could scrape it off, then sanded lightly and put on a couple of coats of clear varnish and it came out wonderfully!! With true antiques, less is more and besides, as a dealer, I generally wont get enough out of machines to be able to afford to totally refinish the cabinets. A guy at a Red Wing antiques mall had done a wonderful job totally refinishing a Singer Drawing Room Cabinet - it was gorgeous but he wanted nearly $800 for it - something thats not gonna happen in this area and he kept after me as to value until I had the unhappy chore of telling him hed be lucky to get $400-500 out of it IF the machine was also complete, cleaned, oiled & stitching properly. Im sure he had that much time into it but for resale, a total refinish is generally not economically feasible!!
