Some of you are wondering why i voted to develop a convention centre subject to four conditions (including suitable funding). Here are my main reasons: 1. Our business people are completely convinced that this will broaden their industry, spread the tourism numbers and turn part time jobs into fulltime and underpin the downtown area as a vital tourism hub. So much so, they are prepared to step up and pay more so residential ratepayers dont have to. 2. The ratepayers ive talked to and listened to in Annual Plan process say theyre unhappy to have increased rates to support a CC. However, if business can fund it, theyre happy to have it. 3. Not one business has come forward in the AP process or personally to me to support the Remarkables Park CC. Most are worried about how that would impact on the downtown (tourism) hub versus Remarks Park (local, suburban) hub and roading infrastructure. 4. It will be a state of the art,flexible building that can also support art and culture as well as conventions. 5. It will underpin the development of the Lakeview site - fitting into our desire for more concentration, intensification of our urban areas.
