Some of you know that Gabi plays violin and has for a while. - TopicsExpress

Some of you know that Gabi plays violin and has for a while. Though I believe, in my heart, she enjoys it, often that doesnt make the process of practice and playing easy. This was a subject that came up this past weekend at a violin camp we attended. One of the amazing things that came out of being there, as a parent, was being able to discuss the many feelings that we have about helping our kids continue their practice. The questions we ask ourselves: How much do we make them practice? Why do we have to make them practice? How do we help engender a love of music while so much of it feels like were doing the opposite? How do you handle a child who is a perfectionist? Do you let them quit when they say they want to? On and on. Needless to say--it can be a harrowing roller coaster ride. Meanwhile, I just sat and listened to her play Beethovens Minuet in G. She first plucked out the entire piece. Then she proceeded to take her time. I noticed she took breaths throughout (something that was reinforced at violin camp), focused on dynamics and vibrato, and played it so beautifully it made me tear up. This is how I know that its worth it. When I see and hear her play like that. It is not always so clear cut--but I am absolutely thrilled when it is.
