Some of you may choose to view the movie The Theory of Everything. Jan and I viewed the movie Sunday afternoon. The movie is a biography of the early life of Stephen Hawking, the worlds most famous living scientist who has lived with ALS for fifty years. The movie is based upon the book written by Hawkings first wife, Jane. There is some controversy about the movie and if you go you may wish to read this review: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2872110/How-new-film-Stephen-Hawking-s-life-split-family-glitziest-premi-res-did-two-sisters-one-ex-wife-boycott-it.html. The portrayal of Hawkings life with ALS sparked much discussion between Jan and me. The movie incorrectly portrays Hawkings first wife as deciding to marry Hawking after falling in love with Hawking and then learning of his ALS. In fact, he has been diagnosed with ALS before they met. She decided to have a life with him after the diagnoses just as Jan chose to join me after Jane had passed and I had been diagnosed with ALS. Jan is indeed a very courageous and compassionate lady. The movie accurately portrays the difficulty of living with ALS for both Stephen and his wife, Jane. Jan and I question the accuracy of the portrayal of the progression of the disease. It certainly is nothing like what I have experienced or of anyone I personally know who has ALS, but everyones experience is unique so the directors portrayal could be accurate. I question that Hawking had such poor access to assistance like walkers, etc. My drop foot experience was far different than what was portrayed in the movie. Usually, the disease starts in the upper extremities or the lower extremities and then progress to the other, not in both upper and lower simultaneous as is portrayed in the movie. I dont know if the portrayal is accurate or if the portrayal is for dramatic effect. The overall story is very good. The acting is sensational to my mind. I hope my friends will see the movie and encourage their friends to see the movie so that there can be more awareness of this disease. For Jan and I the movie was pungent for we have had to make the same decisions as did Stephen and Jane Hawking. I feel as though I am the Luckiest Man in the World to have this amazing lady, Jan, loving me and willing to make a life with me to the very end. I love her so much. This is certainly a unique experience for her. We got to see Jane Hawking making the same decision and learn of the difficulties she had caring for Hawking and their three children. Together, Jan and I are meeting some very amazing and strong people who endure this disease day by day and spouses who live with and modify their daily living every day to meet the challenges of an ever weakening body. There are indeed some true heroes out there in the ALS community.
