Some of you may have already seen this news item in Winemaker Weekly, but we wanted to make sure everyone is aware… To conserve their dwindling grape-growing resources, the worlds leading wine producers have adopted an odd/even system for making red and white wines. Starting in 2015 and continuing in odd-numbered years, only white grapes can be harvested for the purpose of winemaking. In those years, only white wines will be produced. The policy will be reversed for even-numbered years, starting in 2016, when only red grapes can be harvested for winemaking. In those years, only red wines will be produced. Under the alternate year agreement, any grapes harvested in violation of the odd/even policy can be used to make other products, including jelly, but they can not be fermented to produce wine.
