Some of you may have seen Jeff Alexander s status update. If not I - TopicsExpress

Some of you may have seen Jeff Alexander s status update. If not I highly recommend people go and get at least CPR/AED certified. You may need it one day to save a life. Here is the story: After travelling back from Jakarta today and having not much sleep (20 + hours travel and no sleep) Jeff wanted to grab lunch. We went to our favorite restaurant next door. There was a large group of people having a late lunch. Jeff and I were halfway through our lunch and we saw a gentleman seize up and started to turn blue in the face. Some people panicked some people stared not sure what to do. Jeff and I began to immediately assess the situation. Someone screamed call 911. I grabbed my phone and this lady said 911 has been called. Good. In the meantime I saw a gentlemen who said I am a doctor, started to try the Heimlich and when nothing really changed, he then he began to do mouth to mouth and asked for assistance for compressions. Both Jeff and I were ready. Another woman (turns out she was a nurse) was already giving compressions and she was really pressing hard so I knew she knew what she was doing. Jeff then got in and then I believe someone else. I started to inquire about an AED and get additional information from the wife of the man to tell the paramedics. The EMTs arrived quickly (thank God) I told them compressions had been going on for appx 4- 5 min and there was no AED on site. FYI the person’s chance of surviving drops by 7%-10% per minute until treated with defibrillation according to the Red Cross. After about 5 minutes the EMTs did their thing and they transported the gentlemen who appeared to be breathing again and conscious . Thank you God. Having the CPR/AED definitely will give you confidence in a situation like this. Everyone can play a role and we all can help each other. You never know when you will need it. Knowledge is power.
