Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP has been active in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction 2005, when the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) was formally endorsed as the global framework on disaster risk reduction. Working within the framework of the HFA, UNEP has identified Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) as its niche. Since 2008, UNEP has supported a unique partnership of 17 organisations known as the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), which promotes and advocates for ecosystem-based solutions for disaster risk reduction as well as adaptation to climate change-related risks. In March 2012, UNEP was awarded by the European Commission to support UNEP’s planned activities on Eco-DRR. These activities include global advocacy, capacity building, in-country pilot demonstration projects, development of knowledge products and global partnerships focused on Eco-DRR. Partnership building and capacity development is a major component of the project. The primary platform through which UNEP collaborates and leverages its influence is through PEDRR (pedrr.org). Nonetheless, UNEP is also looking to influence other partnerships and networks and leverage their skills and resources in support of further scaling up and replicating Eco-DRR approaches through capacity building, advocacy and effective communication. One new area of our work is the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Disasters and Ecosystems, which is a collaborative project between UNEP, the Center for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD) network, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, and the Global University Partnership on Environmental Sustainability (themooc.net).
