Some of you might remember the cyber bullying going on all summer with Oldestspawn. After months of ignoring, we finally reported it to the police in August. Many said we were wasting our time, that we were overreacting, that bullying makes kids stronger, and that we should ignore it and it will go away. We did ignore, even though it was hard to do with awful names typed under her picture for everyone to see. I saw no evidence of this behavior making my child stronger. She was already strong. I think it upset me far more than it did her, but we ignored like we were advised. After waiting all summer, it was still happening. So, despite the eye rolls, sighs and well-meaning advice, and even Oldestspawns hesitation, we filed a report. It was a simple thing to do, and we waited. Long story short, the detective has tracked down those responsible, the page is down, and the girls will be held accountable. Harassment via the Internet is a crime. The police do take it seriously, and we are not helpless to protect our children, or to prevent other children from being victims of these bullies. Suicide can be and is a very real result of bullying. If thats not a reason to act quickly, I dont know what is. Bullying should never be tolerated or ignored. Standing up for your kids works. No matter what anyone tells you, the advice youre given, or even what your child might say, you dont have to remain silent. Stand up for them. You can, you should, and you will be taken seriously.
