Some of you that I have spoken with or reached through the Head Strong page know that I had planned a fundraiser to raise money and awareness for the dangers and life long struggles that follow from having multiple concussions. The funds were to be divided between the Boston University Brain Bank, creating an educational curriculum for local Jr Highs and High schools and start a scholarship that would pay for a person who cannot afford the extremely expensive brain rehabilitation treatment needed for these type of injuries. I am currently in brain rehab facility (or was, long story with insurance battle that is the basis for my inability to do this) and have been making great progress. However, I also injured my back in the car accident last year which landed me in this situation. Over the past few months I have undergone several steroid treatments and extensive physical therapy to get my lower back in shape so that I could hike the Oregon section of the PCT for the fund raiser. A few weeks ago my employer decided that they no longer wanted to assist me on disability and let me go, this was a week before a back surgery that would have addressed the pain and inability to walk at times so that I could do the hike later this summer. I hope that those of you who are interested in donating to this cause still send a check off to BU and really hope that those of you who do not know about the current science coming out regarding head injuries do some more reading. I have taken a couple spills on hikes and I know that most of my friends that backpack also do sports such as mountain biking, skiing and rock climbing which all come with a very high likely hood that you will experience at least one concussion. I know its last minute, but I attempted to fight this decision on my insurance as long as I could before I made this decision (I am not done fighting but even if I get it back the surgery would be at or near the end of July which would but this long of a hike out of this summer) since I have spoken to and posted information on this website about the fundraiser I felt as though there needed to be an explanation as to why it will not be happening this year. Hopefully next year I can do it right with a through hike from Canada to San Diego.
