Some people find getting the right balance when raw feeding - TopicsExpress

Some people find getting the right balance when raw feeding difficult. While initially it can take a little getting used to, eventually it just becomes second nature. The Prey Model Raw guidelines for raw feeding proportions (and to ensure the full array of vitamins and minerals) are: 80%meat, 10%bone, 5%liver, 5%other organ. Where people get confused is thinking the 10% bone means 10% meaty bones...when in actual fact it works out to around 40% meaty bones (remember the bone is surrounded by meat so it cant be counted as 100% bone). So here is an easy way to start...begin with feeding 40%meaty bones, 5%liver, 5%kidney/spleen and 50%boneless meat. Let thy poop be thy guide. If you are finding your dog is getting consistently loose stools, increase the meaty bones by 5% each week until their stools are normal (dont exceed 50-60%). Alternatively, if you find they are getting constipated and their stools are consistently hard and white, decrease the meaty bone % until their stools are normal. Liver must sit at 5% of the diet, it is essential and can not be skipped....so if your pet is fussy you will need to try a few different tricks to get them to eat it. This might include feeding it frozen instead, dicing it up and mixing with their other meats, hiding it in their favourite meal, slightly searing it, or blending it into a puree with their other organs and mix with mince and freeze into organ balls. And thats pretty much it. If you are still having trouble finding the right balance I offer a service where I can do up a customised menu plan for your dog so you can be sure they are getting everything in the right amounts.
