Some people laugh and poke fun at me because my husband and I use - TopicsExpress

Some people laugh and poke fun at me because my husband and I use pay per use phones. We turn them off when we roadtrip or hike, and I rarely have it on when I take my camera out for a walk. We have these cellphones for the same reason we bought our very first cellphones (also pay per use) - for use in case of an emergency. Call us old fashioned. Call us behind the times. We dont care. Were still connected to the world. Were connected to the world we can see, and smell, and feel. When I spend time with my friends, I want to spend time with THEM. Not the top of their head, as they look down in their lap, following FB status updates, and responding to text messages. Sure, I love following FB, and I spend quite a bit of time online because I work on the computer, and its always there... in the background... tempting me to take a break from work and see whats going on with everyone. But I cant tell you how freeing it is - how liberating! - to actually be in a place without internet service or cellphone service. Its addictive, this online life. No doubt about that. And Im not always resistant. But my happiest moments are when Im spending time with someone I really like - or love - and the phone is tucked away and ignored. Thats real socialization. Thats real human interaction. I miss that. (Now if only the friends who live in my computer were close enough to hang out with in reality. That would be perfect!)
