Some people may say that getting cut at an audition is a failure. Today, it sparks a new beginning. I auditioned for the Phantom Regiment this weekend and experienced one of the most strenuous, exciting, exhausting, and flat-out fun weekends of my life auditioning for a snare drum spot. With no previous corps or WGI experience, I advanced to the final stage before receiving the bad news that I was not one of the final 8 snare drummers. But my head is still high and my spirit is soaring because I know what I am capable of. Drumming alongside 40 amazing players for 3 days straight tested me mentally and physically at depths I didnt even know existed, and I held my own ground. Being told no in your life can sometimes be an even greater motivator than always getting what you want. It is, at least, for me. I am a much better snare drummer, musician, and individual because of this audition, and my drive to achieve this final goal is now stronger than ever. I know this status seems pretty self-centered, but I think sometimes channeling any negative emotion into a positive outlook is the ultimate tool for progress and eventual success.
