Some people might think when a designer put draw circle on a poster, its just for no reason, or to make it look pretty. Well, its not :) The truth is, design is a whole long proccess of thinking and analysis that requires both creativity and logical thinking. Its about problem solving and delivering messages. Theres a broad range of factors that determines every decision making in design, each one with their own impacts and concequences to the future user. Hospitals dont paint its walls in red, charity orgaziations dont use sharp shapes for their logos, houses have less windows on its east and west facades, and most restaurants decorate their interior in browns and oranges. These are all decision makings in design that requires analysis. Design is a study about understanding human psychology. Designers pay attention on how people think and react, what they like and dislike, how they behave and why. Design is never just about me, its about us and them. When a designer is about to design something that meant to be used or consumed by public, the ideal way of doing it is not to do the job for whoever that hired them, but to do the job for everybody who will use the design. A client might not like red as their personal taste, but then again a design that is meant for public is not about what you like personally. Behind every artwork, a graphic design, a furniture design, a building, an object design, an illustration, or a building, designers spent hours and hours doing a process of analyzing and identifying problems, highlighting strengths and trying to overcome weaknesses in each project. They observe and collect datas, drowning in books and other documented existing precedents, in order to be able to construct the right and solid concept and make a design statement. Then from that point they start brainstorming ideas, making sketches and models and alternatives, analyzing each one of them, eliminate the weak ones and developing the strong ones, a go back and forth process, until it came to one final idea. Even from then, the final design still needs to be refined, to be reanalyzed, to be tested if its possible, in many cases, design process can meets a dead end and the whole process needs to be restarted again from scratch, just like doing a scientific research. Most of the time designers dont get the chance to share this process to their clients, and the whole complicated and long process seems never happened and stays in secret. All the piles of paperworks of analysis, sketches and research goes to recyle bin as we delivered the pretty final result. Well, obviously designers cant really blame clients for thinking that we simply sit in front of computer, googling images and drawing cool stuffs because we have the talent for it, and its very easy to do, instant, and sudden personal interuptions in the whole creative process wont cause too much trouble to the whole process. Communication between both parties has been always the problem. One side doesnt bother to share, the other doesnt bother to know and usually time doesnt allow this to happens as well. Well thats a long facebook status, but I just thought it might be interesting to share :p
