Some people say the root cause of the Civil War was slavery. As a - TopicsExpress

Some people say the root cause of the Civil War was slavery. As a history teacher I had in high school put it when we were studying the civil war and I tend to follow this method of thinking when it comes to the causes of the civil war. He was also a big civil war buff. He told us when it comes to the study of the civil war specially its causes you need to look at it in the analogy of a tree. if a tree were to have one root would it have the support needed to stand? The answer here is no it would not. Just as the civil war could not be supported by just one cause. There were many causes to the secession of the South. These are the roots. Yes all of them do point to slavery. Therefore slavery is not a root cause but a bass just like the roots connect to the bass of the tree. Then you have the trunk which in the case of the civil war would be secession. then the war it self consisting of the battles would be the branches of the tree. I know I come off as an apologist and as a lost causer. But people need to really look into the other side a little more to realize there was a lot more to the civil war than slavery and the expansion there of. I come off the way I do because someone needs to be a voice of the other side which has had their voice snuffed. As I have said before a few months ago there are two sides to the war which means there are two different stories out there about the war. People spend to much time looking at the one side. I am not trying to get into an argument. I am just pointing out what was taught to me. I play devils advocate on the subject which is why my posts tend to be more to the side of those on the south. I just hope that this can bring some insight on what I have found to be a interesting way to study the civil war. It is called studying the civil war with an open mind rather than the close mind of the history taught out there that the south was beaten and there fore is wrong and their story doesnt matter. Both sides of the story matter neither one matters more than the other. Go into studying the civil war with the mind set that you want to learn as much as you can about both sides.
