Some pictures from last Wednesdays #SoupAndSmiles. So many people cuing up for hot soup with bread, hot food, bags of fruit and warm clothes. What we find as important however is spending time speaking to the recipients of this service. There are so many wonderful things we can learn from these encounters. Last week, one of our volunteers spoke to a lady who has been attending every week. Contrary to popular generalisations about the homeless, her demeanour is of elegance and she is a very principled lady. When a volunteer asked if she would like to take a bag of mixed fruit for later, her response was, I dont want to be greedy. Now, wed like you to reflect on this point. This is a lady who has very little or no money. She lives on the streets. She really doesnt know where her next snack is going to come from never mind a meal, but yet she doesnt want to hoard food and stop it from going to someone else who may need it. This was amazing. A truly humbling encounter. The lady were referring to doesnt even know how profound her attitude towards others actually is. The week before we learned about the street poet who sells his poems for food. We learn so much every week and are humbled by our encounters. Once again, a big thank you to Free Milk and The Food Box for their contribution of fresh fruit and warm food aswell as Coffee 4 Craig for donation of warm clothes.
