Some pretty exciting news on the local food front; a new brand of milk called “Udderly Kentucky” has recently been launched. The brand is a partnership between the KY Dept. of Agriculture, a local KY milk processor, and over 100 local KY dairy farms, including 10 farms right here in Casey County! The initiative is a great way to eat local & support our local dairy farmers. In addition, I checked with the KY Dept. of Agriculture and they confirmed that all milk in the “Udderly Kentucky” program is rbST and rBGh hormone free. For full information on the program, please go to their website: udderlyky/ Unfortunately, although the AG Dept. is working to gain more grocery partners, at present the “Udderly Kentucky” brand is only available at Wal-Mart. This poses a problem for our Chamber of Commerce since we absolutely want to support our local dairy farmers, but not at the expense of encouraging people to shop at Wal-Mart over our local grocery stores. We want you to shop local at every opportunity, however, at knowing that many of you will shop at Wal-Mart anyway, we would ask that if you do, please at least try and make it a point to look for & purchase “Udderly Kentucky” milk over other brands. Hopefully, we will have “Udderly Kentucky” brand milk available in our local stores soon.
