Some talkers have emailed me about attending last nights rail study asking for my take on it. Here is a summary of my interpretation: One aspect of the report had to do with the economic impact of the tourist train, which was based upon a survey of approx. 470 passengers over the course of a few weeks. The survey seemed to show that there was some economic impact to downtown businesses particularly eateries, but this by itself did not match the annual expenditure for track and bridge maintenance. What I found interesting was, the majority of riders were from the immediate region and often were repeat visitors to Lebanon. The greater impact would come from freight customers. The Consultant said if one fright customer could be lined up then immediately grants would be available to defray the cost of track and bridge maintenance. While currently not certified for freight traffic, the consultant thought it possible with re-evaluation of the tracks and bridges. Having freight travel would not preclude the current use for the tourist/passenger train. No decision was made by council.
