Some time ago I sat in a waiting room next to a woman who was the manager of a regional supermarket whose name I will not mention. At the time, there were daily stories in the mainstream media about Americans on food stamps. I seized the opportunity to ask her, What percentage of your daily receipts are in food stamps? Much to my surprise, she answered, about fifty percent. I followed up with, What would happen to your store if you lost those food stamps. She ponder the question for a moment and then answered, wed probably close the doors. If it hadnt been clear before, it certainly became clear after this conversation... it is not just poor people who become dependent upon food stamps for their daily bread. I challenge you to contact your local supermarket and ask them what percentage of their daily receipts are in food stamps. I can tell you they will not answer the question. You may even ask your congressional representative... as they oversee the food stamp program... they wont tell you either. It seems that they only want you to know that poor people receive food stamps. It has been my experience that people want jobs... jobs that pay wages that support families. Welfare does pass through the pockets of the poor but it fails to lift them up. It does, however, make big profits for big-box stores... it probably just covers the overhead of what is left of the mom-and-pop shops. Mollie Burns
