Some time back there were many comments on a post about Sanskrit being made compulsory in a British University while it is ignored (dying) in India by Subramanium Swami some of the comments were informative while others were silly but all of them supporting Swami . This post is expression of my pain on reading the above comments Sanskrit is not the sole propriety of Hindus/BJP/VHP/RSS. Similarly Urdu / Arabic is not the sole propriety of Muslims / Arabs. Sanskrit like any other language is immortal whether studied or not . Language is not some wild life species to die one day . Anybody interested can study any language There are many non- Hindus including Muslims who have studied Sanskrit There is nothing called secular Hindus. Fortunately a large majority of Hindus are broad minded not cowards as mentioned in one comment. During the process of studying history of Hindi language as part of my All India Higher Secondary curriculum I learnt that all Indian languages originated from Sanskrit . Urdu was made by mixing Sanskrit and Arabic; and Hindi was made by mixing Sanskrit and Urdu. I cannot understand how studying/not studying Sanskrit is connected to Hindu culture . Is it not true that most of us call the Bhattji for Hindu religious occasions and repeat the Sanskrit mantras without bothering about the meaning .Do the people who are so affectionate to Sanskrit listen to Sanskrit news on Doordarshan everyday .For heaven sake with limited exposure do not link Sanskrit/ languages to politics ( BJP /Congress or Modi/Gandhis) There is even a silly comment that in South India studying Hindi is considered communal . I am compelled to add with Tamil as my mother tongue I studied in English medium in Convent School & Kendriya Vidyalaya with Hindi as second language and Sanskrit as third language .I studied Tamil at Home .Further my classmate encouraged me to study Urdu so as to appreciate the shaiyiris and gazals in Hindi film music. All Indians are patriotic and do not sell their integrity .All secular people are Nationalist. South Indians call everyone above Andhra and Karnataka as North Indians, while the North Indians call people from all four southern states as Madrasi . One can appreciate the beauty/intricacies of Indian languages by travelling across India . In South, Tamil is spoken in Tamil Nadu, Malayalam in Kerala, Kannada in Karnataka and Telugu in Andhra. Additionally Tulu is spoken by Udipi people in Karnataka .Each of them are independent . Similarly Haryanvi is different from Hindi &Punjabi , Konkani is different from Marathi, Assamese is different from Bengali but outsiders confuse between them . Bhojpuri Magadhi and Maithili is spoken in Bihar ; Katchi and Saurashtrian in Gujarat; Kannada, Konkani, Tulu in Karnataka etc . Each language has a rich cultural heritage .No one can claim that one is better than the other. Hindi and English are link languages which unite India. The Government of India has made an audio visual Mile sur mera thumara.... in Raag Desh with lyrics in the different languages and videos of prominent people in signature locations of different Indian states to understand the variety in the languages and culture of India and appreciate India s Unity in Diversity. After repeatedly watching this audio visual one should refrain from making ridiculous, sweeping, judgmental, irresponsible statements about the various Indian languages and people of India. Language is universal Bhasha Sabka hai Sirf Kuch Khas logon ka Jagir Nahi. Therefore do not link language to politics.
