Some times, some things are more important than bedtime... After watching The Butler together, how glad I am that Talei was at least previously familiar with the Little Rock 9, Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King, the Holocaust... We paused every time she asked about or commented as to who was and wasnt a good president, foreign policy, the KKK, slavery, confusion about the controversial use of the N word, South Africa, The Black Panthers, Vietnam... The recent election between Obama & Romney... Have you learned very much about the Civil Rights Movement in School, Talei? T: No, not really... Actually, never. But I learned a lot from the movie. We should really learn more (American) History in school, Mom. I kind of feel like its more important than even Math and Reading. Because you know, what goes around comes back around. Out of the mouths of babes... NCLB= a nice idea terribly implemented to equal = no more art, no more science, no more music, no more social studies and history (unless of course, you were lucky to be a student of my mom, a REBEL, whos been secretly still teaching art, science, music, poetry, creative writing, PE, history and nurturing well-balanced childhood all these years). Grandma Lisa would be proud, Talei.
