Some times when I leave my family and my work to participate in a fraternity event, people will ask me, "When are you going to give up that fraternity stuff?". I usually just laugh and tell them when I get a little bit older. No more. From now on I am going to tell them "the day I die." I volunteer because this fraternity changed my life. I hope that I can make a difference in the lives of the young men who are members right now. I have spent the last five days working with a FANTASTIC group of young men--hoping to impart valuable lessons about life and leadership. I did not know if what I was trying to teach them took root--until tonight. On the very first day of the Ruck Leadership Institute, my co-facilitator, Kevin Teets, and I talked to them about encouraging the heart and thanking people for a job well done. Tonight, at the closing banquet, each Ruck scholar from the Yellow Group gave us each a handwritten thank you note--not one line or two, but a whole page, thanking us for our time and the lessons we imparted. I go to bed this morning with a full heart and with confidence that my fraternity, our fraternity, is in excellent hands. They will make a difference; indeed, they already have. Thank you Yellow Group from the bottom of my heart. And that is why I continue to volunteer.
