Some watch with wonder the events that have been unfolding in our community and have no understanding. There have been conditions growing over years that have led us to today. The unambiguous decisions to cut social programs, concentrate populations in racial homelands, imprison large numbers of young men and increasingly young women have all served to tear apart the fabric of communities. As that fabric has ripped it has become harder and harder to sustain families and communities. Decades of research have shown the evidence of this turmoil. But that research has often come from above. It looks down from macro spaces to talk about the variables of life that in many ways have stopped being variable, this condition has become constant. What the research has failed to do is to examine the human story as one that is lived each day by people who are negotiating life against all odds. Their discomfort has boiled over and now that it is out of the bottle it can never be put back. Fergusson is the place where this play is being acted out today. However, the script has been written and played out on stages from sea to shining sea. This IS the American story. Seeking to parse it out as some localized action of a bunch of malcontents is the peril of an ignorant nation.
