Some white hipster girl comic was recently whining about lack of diversity at Portland mics. I hit two spots tonight; Fight Church and Jamie Stewarts mic. At both spots, I was the minority as a white male, and the most well-received act was a black female. Dear inner-Portlandia Portland, its not that minorities and women dont come to your mics due to antifeminist white male gaze or whatnot, its that people, of all genders and ethnicities, are sick of unfunny artsy rooms full of trust fund babies whining about first world problems. Clique-y, humorless rooms that play like Wes Anderson b-sides define the Portland comedy scene, and the most racist people in it are the first to throw out accusations to the contrary. Portland isnt racist by itself. Well-intended hipsters make it so. Quit tokening out your target market and start being funny instead. I only assume black women and white men can agree that a room full of hipster trash is not gonna be the next Apollo. Hashtag Monday mics in Portland. Backslash team Mama Sons.
