Some words from Janine on the 40th anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus this weekend (Cypriot Community Remembrance Day): I note this service not only commemorates the 40 years of Turkish occupation of 1/3rd of Cyprus but also 40 years after the establishment of the Cypriot Community of WA. So while the organisation was built from grief, anger and adversity it has clearly grown from strength to strength ensuring that those that suffered in 1974 and since are not forgotten and ensuring Australia remains committed to a united Cyprus. Cypriots have made a great contribution to Australia’s diverse community demonstrating core values of inclusion, fairness and democracy – values which would lead to a rich and tolerant united Cyprus when unification is finally achieved.
