Some years ago, I heard a programme on BBC Radio 4, in which a linguist described research he had made into accents and pronunciation. He claimed a correlation between landscape and vocal patterns - the soft lilt of those in the Scottish Highlands, the flat intonation of inhabitants of Lincolnshire/the Fens - and captivated me. I wrote to the BBC to ask for a transcript - they asked for £10, which at the time, I just could not afford.
