Some years ago, a couple of truly monstrous people committed a horrific, destructive mass murder. And yet, in response, we have slaughtered hundreds of thousands, sent our men and women to die in a godforsaken wasteland, wasted trillions of dollars of wealth on the project of destroying trillions of dollars more abroad, subjected ourselves to endless surveillance and searches, and created a legal culture in which everyone is presumed guilty and terrorism is the magic word justifying just about any wickedness. The attacks 13 years ago were truly horrible, but we have been completing the mission they set out on. Perhaps its time we forget.
