Somebody commented on my Ebola blog...I worked for 25 years as a supervisor of clean Rooms in the Pharmaceutical industry. We produced sterile injectable medications, and prided ourselves on never having a drug recall for Sterility problems. The Personal protective Atire we used was designed to keep the drug from becoming infected with bacteria from our bodies. This was in middle 1970’s and every inch. Our skin was covered . The use of Laminar Flow and Aseptic Techniques were Key to preventing cross contamination. This Whole Ebola episode has been nothing but one screw up after the other ! And going forward, I really don’t think anyone has learned anything from it, we had written procedures posted in the work area. We also reviewed a different key written Procedure each month. No one person could change a procedure, all changes no matter how minor had to be reviewed with clean room personal and at least two Supervisors. They were then changed and signed by all involved parties. ( that’s a key way of getting buy in and compliance of all procedures) One other thing we discovered over the years was our gloved hands poised the biggest source of contamination, so we designed a hands free pedal operated gloved hand sprayer with the pressure vessel containing 70 % IPA solution. That clean room personal would very frequently spray there gloves removing possible contaminants. We also found that if a small hole the size of a Quarter was inserted in the sleeves 2″ from the end of the sleeve of the sterile tyvek jumpsuits and the thumb of a gloved hand was inserted, then the second glove was put on each hand, you would never gave a problem with glove deprecation from the sleeve of the jumpsuit. There are so many resources in this great country , the Areo Space the Electronics , and Pharmaceuticle industries. All use clean rooms and allow zero cross contamination !!
