Somebody gave me a “7.” 1) I spent several years when I was a kid daydreaming about becoming pope. 2) In my teens, while having fun smashing some huge glass jugs into a garbage bin, I almost cut off my left index finger. You can still feel the scar tissue on the tendon. 3) My father, uncle and grandfather used to own a bakery called “Michael & Sons.” Years later, as a shortening salesman, my uncle got me a job at the last bakery my grandfather worked at. It’s still there on McNichols in Detroit. Knudsens Danish Bakery. 4) Two of my best friends died way before their time. 5) After a barbershop quartet rehearsal, I was waiting at a red light when a drunk rammed his Cadillac, full speed, into my dinky Toyota wagon and it exploded into flames. Before I could escape, the fire singed the hair off the back of my head. 6) Several times, I hitchhiked back and forth between Detroit and LA. One time I showed up, bearded, at Mom & Dad’s house in Southfield, Michigan. My mother answered the door, smiled politely and said: “Yes, can I help you?” 7) Without Jill in my life, its highly unlikely I would have been to the southernmost city of the world and touched the arctic ocean, bought commie souvenirs in Siberia and rode camels near the pyramids in Egypt.
