Somebody wrote a letter to the Lebanon Daily News last week trying to criticize me and other Republcans who support Senate Bill 76, basically claiming that eliminating property taxes is a bad idea because the numbers dont add up. What follows is my response, published today: Property tax elimination a matter of rights Editor: I read with great interest Joel Smiths letter about eliminating property tax. Even more interesting are his assumptions of my motives for wanting to get rid of this archaic and unfair method of taxation. Smith completely misses the real reason why property taxes should be abolished: Because acquiring, possessing and defending property is an inherent right guaranteed by Article I Section 1 of the Pennsylvania Constitution. Property rights are listed squarely at the top of our Declaration of Rights, because property ownership is a cornerstone of all other freedoms. Imagine the public outrage if exercising our rights to vote, free speech, worship or associate hinged on the ability to pay a tax. We wouldnt stand for it. Not for a minute. Yet none of these rights are listed in Article I, Section 1 of our state Constitution. While they are all important rights, they fall into place farther down the list than the right to acquire, possess and defend property. If we wouldnt stand for a tax on exercising those rights, then why should we stand for a tax on exercising our more fundamental property rights? The answer is that we shouldnt. Not for a minute. When people first came to America, they came because they wanted property of their own. If youre living on property belonging to a king, a noble or a lord, you need his blessing to speak, to worship and to associate. Property ownership makes for a free people. Property taxes, on the other hand, only serve to establish a new breed of kings, nobles and lords. We are not subservient serfs. We are a free people with a government created to serve us. Its time we demand our freedom and abolish property taxes once and for all. Russ Diamond, Annville
