Someone Stole my Thoughts and Words of the last 35 years.... (see earlier postings about school and library buildings) Linda is a trusted commenter Oklahoma 14 hours ago I think that one reason the government and education arent respected as much as they once were is because the buildings no longer say, This is an important building where important things happen. When I was little, the towns library had tall, marble steps and Greek columns across the front. Inside there were marble floors, a huge antique grandfathers clock, and classical busts of children reading books. I loved that library and my love for reading was born there. The new library in town is a flat open space, much like a Walmart. It has fluorescent lighting, gray industrial carpet, and no art. I still love reading but I dont feel like spending time in that library. Have you seen old schools? They have terra cotta ornamentation around the doors and windows, art was built into the buildings. The old court houses and post offices resembled the ancient buildings of Athens. All these buildings said, This is an important building. The looks of the libraries, schools, and government buildings now say, Were just functional. Dont expect anything glorious out of us.
